Is Your Name Keeping You Unemployed?

Does your name determine your success? Most would say it doesn’t matter yet multiple experiments have shown that teachers grade the same paper with different names differently. They are subconsciously affected by the name on the paper. If teachers, who see hundreds of children during their careers, are affected by names than what about the employers? The answer is probably yes; they too are influenced by what a person’s name is.

After a friend of his heard my one of my presentations in Kauai, a man whom I’ll call Mark, decided to read, “Know the Name; Know the Person” and see if knowing Neimology® Science could help him get a job. Now Mark knew that he wasn’t the most qualified applicant, even though he had a decent resume. That was not a deterrent. He wondered what he could do to up his chances of nailing the interview. How many of us are in the same position? We desire a job even though we know we aren’t the most qualified applicants?

Mark was interested in using what was written to help him communicate better with the person who would be interviewing him. Now, we often do not know this person’s name prior to our interview, so there is no time to prepare ahead of time. Thus, Mark was introduced to a stranger. He quickly analyzed the interviewer’s name in his mind and decided to address those items that would be of concern to the interviewer based on his name. Long story short, Mark was offered the job.

The most interesting part of the story though, is not that Mark was offered the job, as chapter two details the six different communication styles based on the first vowel in the first name. What was interesting is that Mark asked the names of the people that he would be working with when hired and decided he did not want to work with these people as it would be problematic. Thus, he declined the job offer.

How many times do we accept a job just to find out later that it didn’t measure up to our expectations? Or, that we so dislike the people we have to work with daily? On the one hand, would it help to have insight into these people prior to saying yes to a job? You bet it would. On the other hand, if we know ahead of time where the possible conflicts will arise, we can modify or adjust our communication behaviors so that the conflicts are negated before they start. Bottom line is that we have choice.

The most important way of utilizing the knowledge of how to interpret names in an interview is to be able to speak in the communication style that is easiest for the interviewer to hear and to address those items in your name where you can identify possible conflicts in a positive way during the interview. It is important to negate any points of hesitation that may arise to you being hired during the interview.

It is also important to address the receptionist, secretary and all others with whom you come into contact in their communication style, thus leaving a positive impression on all you’ve met.

Another important way of using Neimology® Science is to write your cover letter in the same style as the person who is the head of the human resource department. We are entering a new year; why not put your best foot forward and get the job you desire?
