Have a Ball? Have a Ball!

Have a Ball? Have a Ball!

“Can you blow up my ball?”

“Sure, you going to use it? “

“Yes, but I don’t know what to do.”

“No worries, I’ll show you”.

That’s been a typical request at the studio for years. The purchase is easy. You get it blown up and then what?

Do you have an exercise ball but haven’t the faintest idea of what to do besides bounce? I’ll bet you even that bouncing ain’t too easy if you’ve never been on one.

It’s kind of cool on the history of the ball which was originally developed to treat newborns and infants in Switzerland in the early 60’s. Since then it’s lent its variations to physical therapy, orthopedics, athletic training, Pilates, and yoga.

The idea behind sitting on the ball is that you’ll become more engaged in your core structure - your abdominals, low back, hips, inner thighs, and butt to teach better body awareness. This doesn’t automatically happen. As in any new learn over time your neuro-muscular system has to integrate the sensations of the unstable ball. Here’s where you’ll build subtle core strength and stability. You’ll begin to see the difference from repeated periods of practicing some simple moves.

Today, I’ll share with you tips for immediate action using the ball as an alternative to your chair.  Doesn’t have to be all the time. Mix up your sitting medium. You’ll find this especially helpful when you get stiff and stuck from sitting too long. And sitting too long can be anything over 50 minutes. Yes, for every 50 minutes of sitting, get up. Walk around, gyrate your hips, wave your arms, swish side to side--- just get up.

Getting up from sitting lets your joints breathe. It circulate the fluids they need to stay healthy and get you to 80 comfortably, without much ibuprofen. Motion is lotion. A simple, sensible and practical way to include motion for your body while you’re chained to your desk is using your ball during your work hours, when you’re sitting and stiffening the most. It’ll even make your ride home a little less uncomfortable because you broke the seal of stiffness earlier.

And here’s a benefit that nobody talks about: You will have a ball on the ball!

If it loosens your joints, gets your circulation bustling, stimulates your semi conscious muscles in your butt, revives your spine, and increases your working metabolic rate you better believe your mind will be stirred. And if your mind and mood is enhanced that’s going to have a direct effect on your work, your attitude and your well being.

Here’s a quick flick with some simple instruction to getting some practical use from your ball instead of your chair.
